    THE ROOTS & WINGS COLLECTION
Celebrating Alabama’s history and our most notable African-Americans who made it!

    Tullibody Fine Arts Center
Warren Britt Gallery at Alabama State University
    February 1 – 28, 2019

In celebration of the Alabama Bicentennial and Black History Month, 21 Dreams Arts & Culture, Inc. in partnership with the AFFIRM Foundation Project presented by Designer Perry Varner will open the Roots & Wings Collection Exhibition in Montgomery, February 1, 2019. This visual arts exhibition is FREE to the public and will be held in the Warren Britt Gallery at the Tullibody Fine Arts Center on the campus Alabama State University through February 28.

The exhibiting artwork created by Alabama artists depicts the lives and achievements of some of our most notable African-American natives. Alabamians who expanded the narrative of success in professional sports, arts, politics, science, and culture as well as those who broke barriers to entry in education and business. It is designed to adequately tell the story of Alabama’s rich cultural history and give recognition to some of the highest achievers who were all born in the great state of Alabama.

While launching in our State's Capital, the Roots & Wings Collection Exhibition will then travel to other cities throughout Alabama for 2019 into 2020. Celebrating Alabama’s bicentennial, the exhibit will showcase at several prominent museums, universities, public schools, expos, events and more.

Ms. Sunny Paulk is an award-winning graphic designer and artist born and raised in Montgomery, Alabama. She was previously employed by the Alabama Shakespeare Festival’s scenic art department and is currently employed as an in-house graphic designer at Southern Poverty Law Center, a non-profit civil rights law firm. Some of her outdoor murals in downtown Montgomery have been featured in The New York Times, CNN, NBC, NPR.org and others.

Her current series, titled, “I Am Still,” examines how women of all ages, races and backgrounds find strength and truth within themselves while navigating in an unjust world. They come together in a powerful and unifying voice showing that beauty, strength and power live inside all women—the givers and nurturers of life itself. She painted this series as a response to the hopelessness and discouragement she and others felt in reaction to men, including the President, continuing to disrespect, degrade and demean women with absolutely no consequence. Her feeling of, “what’s the point?” suddenly became the inspiration itself.

She hopes that through her art she can facilitate unique, complex and thought-provoking stories of humans as individuals and as a part of something bigger. Her belief is we only grow in empathy and connectivity if we take the time to listen to others.

Art. Write. Now. Tour is produced and presented by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, this exhibition showcases a selection of works from the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards—inspiring & innovative work by teens from all across the country.

Teenagers today are coming of age in a time of accelerated social and technological change—making the thoughtful self-exploration of their worlds and lives even more profound. How do they grow into adulthood while ideas about gender and identity are being reexamined? What do they think of the future as the climate changes and the global population grows in size and mobility? We honor these artistic explorations as a means for young people to dream and design a world we can all share.

Explorations of beauty and identity, sharp social commentaries, and acute observations of nature and society populate this curated exhibition. As a collection of works, the Art. Write. Now. Tour 2018-19 presents valuable insights into the minds of teens today.
